Poetry through the Seasons of Life

My final act of love to you is the imaginary wreath that on your grave I lay
Flowers selected because of their meaning and what of our love they say
For words to me are not easy but instead perfume and colour I will let speak
As their scent to heaven rises and I your indulgence seek.

I start with an Aster to represent the delicateness of our love
And a sprig of lavender will show our devotion as your hand fitted mine like a glove,
With honeysuckle to remind me of the bond that was ours
And Balsam to capture the fervent love displayed hour after hour.

Ivy, bold and green, records the bliss of our wedding day
With Myrtle, the Hebrew symbol of marriage, to reinforce it in another way,
Orange blossom, the promise we made of eternal love, marriage and fruitfulness
And Phlox, the harmony and partnership that meant for us no day of dullness.

Then to add a Delphinium and a Crocus symbolizing our happiness and fun
White and Purple Larkspur reminding me of your sweet disposition and the joy we shared as each day was done,
A Pansy to bring back the laughter that we daily so easily shared
And the pale pink rose to capture the joy between us that showed we cared.

To represent my own feelings I include a Hibiscus flower as I am still consumed by love
And a Yellow Iris as passion still runs heavily through my blood,
A Marigold for the mixture of sorrow and affection my heart carries within
With a dark pink rose to show the thankfulness I hide behind eyes filled to the brim.

So with a Cyclamen I am resigned to now say good-bye
Rosemary and Periwinkle to be the remembrance of days gone by,
A clump of Sweet Pea giving thanks for the lovely times we knew
And finally Magenta Zinnia to show my lasting affection that will go on for only you.

My wreath may be an unusual concoction of colour and scent
But it mirrors our love which was so unique and different,
So go my love, step into the garden that awaits you and is yours forever more
Put its pleasures, alongside my everlasting love, gently in your eternal heart's store.
